S&W serial numbers are always stamped on the butt frame of their revolvers. It is usually stamped on the bottom but may be sometimes stamped on the forestrap. More recent models also have the serial stamped in the yoke cut that can be seen with the cylinder open, like on your 66-2. Your gun was made in 1984 or 85.

The 19-2 was made from 1961 until 1967, then they went to the 19-3. Your serial number will start with a K. That number is also found on the rear face of the cylinder and the flat underside of the barrel. It also appears in a couple of other places, but it is harder to see. A postwar K-22 with no Model designation will have a serial number with a K prefix. As the owner of 646390, I'll take a run at that one.

Relax. There were no steel frame Model 39-2 pistols. All the steel frame guns were made in the 1950s and most of them were held in the vault until about 1966, then they were sold off. All of them with model numbers would have been Model 39, not 39-2. Yours will have an A prefix in the serial number and none of the steel frame guns had that.That is indeed an early gun...
