They need to replace the camshafts in the engine. The whirling noise is the rocker arms rubbing against bare, worn metal on the cam shafts. This is a major defect of the CRV.

I did have the CVT serviced at between 55 to 60k to the protest of the service advisor saying it didn't need it until 100k. I could tell the CVT was happier after the service.
