John Deere STX38 shifting problem. I recently bought a used STX38. This is my first ever riding mower. Everything seems to be working great, except when i need to shift down. I will usually run the tractor in 2nd or 3rd gear, but if i need to shift down to 1st or neutral or to get into reverse, it always seems to be a problem.I have a John Deere STX38 lawn tractor manufactured around 1991. It has a belt driven transmission/transaxle . One of the pulleys that this drive belt goes around is broken and I'm trying to replace the pulley and belt. My problem is that this pulley/idler is located right next to the top of the pto clutch unit.
