It appears that on my 1993 Johnson 25hp, one has to set the Joe Reeves method at 0 degrees off the factory specified maximum spark advance. I will re-set it with the Joe Reeves Method tomorrow to 30 degrees, that is, the Joe Reeves Method but minus 0 degrees. To set the timing on that engine, have the s/plugs out, and have the throttle at full, set that timer base under the flywheel tight against the rubber stop on the end of the full spark timer advance stop screw (wire it against that stop if necessary). The important is to get the carbs starting to open at the timing specified when the arrow on #47 lines up with the roller on the carb (pick up timing). From that point and down in rpm, it is all about reducing timing to get correct idle rpm. There is a screw on the portside of the motor which controls the idle. You firstly have to make sure that your cable puls the throttle all the way back. If this does not happen you have to adjust your cables. Another problem can be that the roller of the carb hits the cam to soon. This also increases the idle rpm.
