If it's warm outside, the engine will succumb to heat soak and struggle if filled with regular 87 octane gas. If the air intake filter is clogged or the throttle body is really dirty it will also reduce power and acceleration from a stop.

If sludge forms from short drive cycles or extended oil change intervals it blocks flow and can seize and bust the exhaust camshaft it attaches to. When that code pops the car can't be driven at all. $3150 doesn't seem wildly off.

Sometimes this is just a short jerk/shudder, and other times it is up to a full second before power returns upon 2nd gear engaging. I also am getting what feels like slight slippage shudder at WOT at higher speeds.
