Looks like what you said a 1938 S/42 Luger. Finish looks original, these pistols were hot salt blued, no strawed small parts. I would take it apart to check the interior numbers including the grips which weren't always numbered but they do seem to go with the pistol condition wise. Proper army acceptance stamps on the side of the receiver.
