As an update, the truck does have a 2-speed axle and it turned out to have a sticker in the cab that showed the shifting pattern of 1-Lo, 1-Hi, 2-Lo, etc. up to 4-Hi. So it loaded you would just the axle with each gear change as well as shifting the axle withing each gear (the handle for shifting the axle was on the gearshift.
