1) yes you can use the latest atmosphere with older fw 2) the only benefits is whatever the latest atmosphere version does. Besides that, the only benefits is homebrew that works on older firmwares that ain't supported/updated for the newest firmware.

One major one that was getting on my nerves was chainloading fusee.bin from hekate as this would often black screen on me and require a hard reset on the switch, it was OK loading from hekate_ipl.ini file and calling package3 though. The only thing that could damage your system is if you click yes to install firmware if you have a custom theme installed on your system.
