As it seems you can't swing spears currently. Don't know why, since this was a valid and useful technique even when using a shield. Check the stats on the spear. If it only shows you thrust damage then it can only be thrust. But if it shows swing and thrust damaged then it can also be swung as well as thrust.

Mordhau's system is really good. The directional swings in particular are very responsive. Pretty good for killing Cav too. However, there is a specific perk in the polearm tree that makes your attacks do 70% more damage to horses and, speaking from experience, it is pretty dope.
