The idea is sound, since this is definitely something that people can do in a survival situation. But, wouldn't it make more sense to gather metal directly from world objects and process them? That's so sad too think about, but also it just means there is a lot of content being worked on for the game.

That said, if you go into the Steam properties for the game > beta, you can just roll back to an earlier version of the game. So you will be able to continue on that save even after the update has released. It would only be a problem for mods as they auto-update using the workshop, but you said you weren't using mod so it shouldn't be an issue.
